Viva la Vida, Watermelons by Frida Kahlo Paint by Numbers – Bright Fruit Still Life in Naïve Art Style

A Still Life That’s Anything But Quiet

Frida Kahlo Viva la Vida, Watermelons 1954 – the famous Mexican artist’s last oil painting. A colorful fruit composition: whole watermelons in the back, a halved fruit face-up in front, bright colors of crimson flesh against yellow-green rinds. Naive art style at its most direct. Summer fruit. Each detail raw and honest.

The Origins of the 1954 Painting ‘Viva la Vida, Watermelons’ by Frida Kahlo

Frida Kahlo painted Viva la Vida just eight days before she died in July 1954. She’d been bedridden much of that year, recovering from pneumonia.
And yet – she finished this watermelon painting. It’s raw, direct, and full of something you can’t quite name. She inscribed “Viva la Vida” across the cut flesh of the front fruit. Not a farewell. A declaration.
The painting stayed at La Casa Azul, her home studio in Mexico City. It’s been there – at least in spirit – ever since.
